Gaja’s Tuscan White – Vistamare 2017
Bolgheri, where Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda estate is located, is a special place for reasons that have everything to do with terroir and site specificity. This part of the Maremma is well suited to the three grapes that make up the new blend for the 2017 Vistamare – Vermentino, Viognier and Fiano. These varieties love the combination of poor soils and the hot Mediterranean coastal climate for which the area is famous.
Fiano, while not widely found in the Maremma, comes from two small estate plots (one in Bolgheri and one in Bibbona). The Vermentino and Viognier are planted in Bibbona.
2017 Vistamare is a real gem and shows the complexity that this blend can offer while being quite accessible at the same time. Vistamare is a Toscana IGP and the only white wine from the Ca’Marcanda estate, providing wine collectors with Angelo Gaja’s exclusive expression of Tuscan white wine. Its floral and fruit aromas, as well as the mineral and maritime notes, really bring this part of Tuscany to life and remind us that part of Bolgheri’s appeal is that it is on the sea.
“Vistamare” literally means sea view and is often used by the coastal hoteliers to entice would-be guests, even though their rooms may only offer a limited view of the Mediterranean. The vineyards used for Vistamare actually enjoy just such a panoramic view of the Tuscan horizon.
While the development of the Bolgheri area continues to be one of Italy’s greatest success stories, its vineyards are still relatively young and continue to evolve. The blend change for Vistamare was driven by this vineyard exploration on the estate and the Gaja family’s unending quest for quality, as they continue to improve their own vineyard plantings and experiment with different varieties on these soils.
Vistamare 2017 is targeted to the On-Premise channel, as it is such a versatile food wine and complements many dishes. It can be served with seared scallops, smoked salmon and roasted pork, and also can be enjoyed as an aperitif with charcuterie or seafood crudos. Terlato Wines imports up to 1,000 cases (6pk/750ml) for the US market.
