But more research is needed to see whether CBD helps with a good night’s rest. There have been few controlled studies, and results have been mixed, says Bhanuprakash Kolla, MD, an associate professor of psychiatry and psychology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He and his colleagues recently reported on a small study of 103 patients who were treated for anxiety and/or sleep disorders. Seventy-two of them took CBD, and all completed sleep and anxiety assessments at the onset of treatment and at each monthly follow-up visit.
One concern is that CBD blocks activity of a group of enzymes in your liver that break down other medications, including some used to treat sleep disorders. That might affect how long they stay in your system, and it’s important to keep your doctor updated on any supplements you’re using.
