The 2015 GAJA Vintage Earns Exceptional Reviews & High Scores (91+) from Antonio Galloni of Vinous

Influential wine critic Antonio Galloni, founder of Vinous, wrote extensively about GAJA in October 2018. In addition to awarding wines from the 2015 vintage with stellar scores ranging from 91 to 96 points, Galloni praised the new generation of the Gaja family for their leadership.

Ognissanti (21)In his article Barbaresco – Out of the Shadows: The 2016s and 2015s, Galloni writes,“The young generation is very much in charge at Gaja. Parents Angelo and Lucia might stop by from time to time, but these days, Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni Gaja are running the show. The 2015 Barbarescos are super-polished wines that capture all the best [the] vintage had to offer. The last few years have seen a pretty dramatic set of shifts at Gaja, starting with a move toward sustainable farming in the vineyards to an approach in winemaking that prizes finesse over size. The Gajas describe 2015 as a very warm vintage, especially in June and July, that had the fortune of being able to draw from hydric reserves that remained following rain and snow during winter. Most of the Nebbiolo was brought in between October 10 and 15.”

CR_DOP_NVGAJA Barbaresco Costa Russi 2015
96 Points
“The 2015 Barbaresco Costa Russi is once again striking in 2015. Vertical and lifted, with tremendous energy, the 2015 has so much to offer. Once the most easygoing of the three Barbaresco crus, Costa Russi has inched up in quality in recent years. The 2015 shows the suave mid-palate and raciness that is so typical of this wine, and yet it also has much more obvious structural underpinnings than once was the case. I can’t wait to see how it ages.”

ST_DOP_NVGaja Barbaresco Sori Tildin 2015
95 Points
“The 2015 Barbaresco Sori Tildin is bright, perfumed and lifted in feel. Sori Tildin is always the most delicate of the single vineyard wines. In 2015, it is also a touch lithe. Bright red cherry, mint, pine and floral notes gradually develop in the glass. In two tastings, separated by about six weeks, the Sori Tildin was uncharacteristically austere and compact, its considerable character notwithstanding, Sori Tildin is usually a wine of sensuality, but I don’t see much of that at this admittedly early stage.”

Barbaresco NV_DOPGAJA Barbaresco 2015
94 Points
Gaja’s 2015 Barbaresco is gorgeous. Deep, pliant, and resonant, the 2015 exudes class from the very first taste. Today, the aromatics are not especially open or expressive, but it is the wine’s depth and overall sense of harmony that really carry the day. Hints of orange peel, spice, and rosewater give the 2015 an exotic aromatic top register that is hugely appealing. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem. The 2015 is a wonderfully complete and harmonious wine, but it really does need a few years in the cellar to fully unwind.”

GAJA Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo 2015
94 Points
“The 2015 Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo is endowed with serious concentration and power. In 2015 some of the site signatures that make Sori San Lorenzo so distinctive are not especially apparent. It will be interesting to see how and when they develop. To be sure Sori San Lorenzo comes across as not fully put together and also somewhat in conflict with the approach that drives today’s GAJA wines.”

Darmagi Dop NVGAJA Darmagi 2015
91 Points
“The 2015 Darmagi (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is gracious, medium in body, and fragrant. In this vintage, Darmagi is decidedly medium in body, with more of a red-fruit leaning profile than in the past. Soft, silky, and inviting, the 2015 has a lot to offer. At the same time, the 2015, while attractive, is not as varietally expressive as it can be in the finest years.”
